Shorter days and the end of August have me thinking about fall and winter. I am looking forward to the textures - flannel suitings, checked patterns and knit ties - and colors - deep greens and redish browns - which the season will bring. The days will be dark, cold and even wet, but sun-filled nonetheless.

A New World Altogether
There is just something about a hand-written note. Unexpected. A sense of warmth and welcome. Delight.
Insights and Commentary - David Smyth
Insights and commentary from people involved in style and fashion in Vancouver
You are…
David Smyth - Made-to-Measure Specialist, Harry Rosen
The road travelled…
I started at Austin Reed in Belfast, and transfered to London where I studied cutting and tailoring at the London College of Fashion. I worked for Burberry at their Regent Street, London location, and for various designers in manufacturing.
The more things change…
The most changes have come in going from bespoke, which usually requires two additional fittings before arriving at a finished garment, to made-to-measure which delivers a finished garment. Bespoke became too labour intensive, hence costly, and was also time consuming for the customer.
The more they stay the same…
Men still wear suits, shirts and ties.
Favorite memory/experience…
Watching the faces of a family light up after a complete style transformation of a family member.
Big fan of…
Manchester United, and made-to-measure.
Insights and Commentary (this is a blog afterall)…
The suit has been around for over 100 years. It has transformed from being made with heavy 16-18 oz fabric to today’s lighweight engineered suits. It will still be around for another 100 years.

Really?
"Shoes and shirts required" - you don't say. Well then, might as well add clean underwear to the list, as one can never be too prepared when grocery shopping.
Art and Dress...
...go hand in hand - a form of communication and expression, on display, and subject to interpretation.
